Travel Back To The 1800s At North Carolina’s Island Farm Museum
The next time you’re in the vicinity of Roanoke Island, take the kids over to Island Farm, an interactive, living museum showcasing life on Roanoke Island in the 1850s. Not only is this locale loaded with history, it’s loaded with hands-on history!
Island Farm is located in Manteo, only a short drive away if you're vacationing in Nags Head or nearby beach towns.
Museum displays demonstrate how Roanoke Islanders of the period would have lived, eaten, worked, and slept in the 19th century. But the farm not only shows how things were done...
It's also very hands on! Consider it an immersive learning experience in which visitors actually participate in daily activities as they would have been performed on this farm more than 150 years ago. Feeding the animals is sure to be a favorite!
Live demonstrations in blacksmithing, food preparation (particularly cooking over a fireplace), weaving and spinning wool, and so much more make this an adventure sure to be remembered.
Some current ongoing events at Island Farm include the Make Your Own Cornhusk Doll program that takes place every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., an upcoming Indigo workshop where you'll learn the art of dying with indigo, and many more. See the full list of upcoming events by scrolling down this page on the Island Farm website.
Island Farm is open April through November (closed on Thanksgiving Day). The hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come and spend the day on the farm. You’ll be so glad you did! Learn more by visiting the Island Farm website, right here.
