If you choose to complete this drive in its entirety, prepare to travel approximately 470 miles -- some of which are in Virginia -- but every mile is sure to leave you impressed.
Newfound Gap Road is going to let out your inner adventurer. This road takes you over the Great Smoky Mountains and to some of the most incredible overlooks along the way including the Oconaluftee Valley Overlook, Newfound Gap Overlook, and the Morton Overlook. This scenic drive is 33 miles and we strongly recommend you travel every mile of this incredible road.
North Carolina Highway 28 is a two-lane highway that is ideal for motorcyclists and those who love a thrill. This scenic drive near Bryson City twists and turns and features a narrow roadway and steep drop-offs — but it is absolutely beautiful. This drive takes you through the Smokies and near Fontana Lake. You’ll even come to Fontana Dam, where you can walk or drive along the dam’s surface to capture some one-of-a-kind views.
If breathtaking views are what you’re after, the Cherohala Skyway will not leave you disappointed. This National Scenic Byway climbs to 5,300 feet in elevation and gives you remarkable views of the Great Smoky Mountains and Tennessee River Valley. Do not forget your camera as you will enjoy mountain views, waterfalls, hiking trails, and more. You access this scenic byway on US-74 and NC-28-N.

The Road to Nowhere is located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and it offers a little something for everyone. This scenic drive is only six miles but the road winds through the national forest, making it feel just a little bit longer. Even though your journey is short, you will still pass scenic destinations like views of Fontana Lake and a mile-long tunnel with must-do hiking trails on the other side like Noland Creek, Goldmine Loop, and Lakeshore Trails.
You will never regret your time along the Nantahala Gorge Scenic Byway.. This beautiful drive in North Carolina takes you through the Nantahala National Forest from Bryson City to Marble. Give yourself plenty of time to pull off at the various pull-offs along the river and maybe even enjoy lunch at one of the picnic areas along your way.
Clingmans Dome Road is another short drive — this road is only seven miles. It will take you from the Newfound Gap Road to the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower. Clingmans Dome is 6,000 feet in elevation, the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains and it’s one of the best overlooks in the area. In fact, on a clear day, you can see seven different states. Be aware that this road is closed each winter between December 1 to March 31.
