One of the most fascinating historic venues in all of North Carolina is found within the boundaries of Old Salem in Winston Salem. The indoor venues of this unique museum are currently closed do to the pandemic, but the area is still accessible on foot to explore the open-air features of Old Salem. Until the museum buildings reopen, exploring the outdoor areas will have to suffice. You’ll still have a fun time in Old Salem, so don’t hesitate to make the trip.
Old Salem is a historic district in North Carolina in the very spot settled by the Moravian people in 1766.
It highlights the lifestyle of the Moravian community during the 18th and 19th centuries and is well worth a visit.
When the museum buildings and shops are open, visitors can get a real sense of what life was like centuries ago.
Homes are set up as they were in the period, and live demonstrations are found throughout the district.
During COVID, visitors have been able to gain a keen sense of what life was like for the Moravian community by simply wandering through the historic district. Many historic buildings and replicas of historic buildings still exist, providing much perspective to visitors.
Go ahead, explore on foot and enjoy a day or even just an hour or two getting to know one of the oldest communities in the state.
Be sure to locate (and cross!) Heritage Bridge. It may be one of the most photographed landmarks in the district!
We're eager for the day when Old Salem can return to its festive character and the buildings can reopen on the other side of the pandemic.
But we're also so very glad the community, itself, is still open to visitors even during these tough times.
