The Beautiful Lavender Farm Hiding In Plain Sight In North Carolina That You Need To Visit
For centuries, lavender has been used for its calming properties derived from the sweet yet piney scent of the buds. Rows of beautiful purple buds travers along winding mountains might sound like a dream, but it’s something that can be experienced right here in North Carolina. On a hot summer day, you can smell the lavender in the air and the sight is equally pleasing to the eyes.
Located in Burnsville, Mountain Farms is a 24-acre lavender, blueberry and dairy goat farm. The sustainable farm stresses the importance of hormone and antibiotic free for all of their products ranging from lavender oil to soap to goat cheese.
During the summer months you can visit the farm and cut your own stems or take home fresh lavender bouquets.
The lavender field is described as a 'labyrinth' and winds you through the beautiful fields. One unique aspect of Mountain Farm is the sight of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains looming in the distance. While lavender typically grows in warm, Mediterranean climates, English varieties can be grown with lots of sunlight and the right environment.
The grounds of Mountain Farm are beautiful and perfect for a day trip. If you want to make the trip last a little longer, you can also rent the quaint Blueberry Cottage.
If you like cheese, you're in luck. The goat cheese found at Mountain Farm is artisanal and of the finest variety - plus the farm is part of the WNC cheese trail. You can even meet some of the goats!
You can pick up Mountain Farms' own cookbook containing a variety of farm fresh recipes for snacks, meals, and beverages.
Mountain Farm is the smallest Certified Dairy in North Carolina offering a wide variety of farm-fresh products.
The lavender blooms in June, making this is a great summer day trip. The different varietals and calming scent are using in nearly all of Mountain Farm's bath and spa products. The lavender is also harvested for a variety of culinary products like seasonings, salt, and vinegar.
The bushes also create the border for the meditation labyrinth found here.
While it is a beautiful place, it's important to note that Mountain Farm is only open to the public for special events throughout the year. These include the Lavender Festival and the Toe River Arts Tours, among others. If you're looking to plan a visit, stay up to date with their website and Facebook page (you'll find the links below).
