Hiking is always an adventure and so is this boardwalk trail in North Carolina. Traverse a fresh water swamp from the safety of elevated decking on the Palmetto Boardwalk in Goose Creek State Park in Washington.
Comprised of 1,672 acres on the Pamlico Sound, Goose Creek State Park is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts.
The park features campsites, camper cabins, a swim beach, boating, picnicking, and nearly 10 miles of trails to explore the wilds.
One of them is the Palmetto Boardwalk, a 1.1-mile out-and-back trail leading through the swamp.
Discover wildlife galore on this captivating trail that's perfect for all members of the family.
It boasts only a trace of an elevation gain, but don't let the ease of use mask the fact that it gets hot - and sometimes buggy - in the swamp. So be sure to carry an ample supply of water and consider using a product to ward off the mosquitos in warm weather.
When you've reached the end of the trail you can choose to drop off the boardwalk and connect with the Ivey Gut Trail (take a right turn and follow the red triangles), or tackle the Tar Kiln Trail (take a left turn and follow the orange hexagons).
Get outside and play this season on a trail that's open and accessible year-round in North Carolina.
