North Carolina’s bizarre roadside attractions make up a bucket list of must-see oddities all on their own. Over in the Great Smoky Mountains, for instance, there’s a massive Bigfoot statue perched on the side of a small mountain road. Additionally, most people have heard of the famous prehistoric monument known as Stonehenge that is located in Wiltshire, England. But did you know we have our very own version of Stonehenge in North Carolina?

And although our Stonehenge (known as Hartley Henge) doesn't date back to prehistoric times, it's still a very cool roadside attraction.

Roll up on the site of Hartley Henge and cross a large field to find a set of very large stones resembling those of the real Stonehenge arranged in a spiraling pattern in this middle of the remote field.

The monument was created by a North Carolina builder named John Hartley who placed the tallest of the stones using a compass.

In fact, Hartley added brass plaques to most all of the largest stones — all containing prose he reportedly wrote himself.
