Those of us who have been in Charlotte a while have always known it was awesome, but recently, others around the U.S. are taking notice as well. In fact, this year, Charlotte was featured on the U.S. News “Top 100 Best Places to Live” list. Ranking in the top 30% at number 14, Charlotte is definitely one of the most desirable cities in the South to take up residence. So what makes Charlotte so great? Let us tell you!
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life as we all practice social and physical distancing. While we’re continuing to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, we don’t expect or encourage you to go check them out immediately. We believe that supporting local attractions is important now more than ever and we hope our articles inspire your future adventures! And on that note, please nominate your favorite local business that could use some love right now:
1. Charlotte has slowly transformed from a small Southern city focused on agriculture to a booming, corporate mecca.
In the the 19th century and early 20th century, the main industry in Charlotte was agriculture with a secondary industry in banking. As Charlotte grew, the 1980s and 90s brought the big banks that we know today, and ever since the city has taken off as an appealing headquarters location for companies in a variety of industries.
2. We've got all the sports - and the fan fanatics to prove it.
Sports have become increasingly popular as Charlotte's population has grown over the last few decades. The Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Hornets have the strongest following, but we have many semi-professional and minor league teams in town that fans love to cheer on to victory.
3. The art and culture in our city is unmatched.
One of the coolest things about Charlotte is how important art and culture is. Unique neighborhoods like Plaza Midwood and NoDa embrace the arts and have formed their identities around it. It is not unusual to walk through one of these neighborhoods and see an amazing street mural, sculpture, or random piece of art in a neighbor's yard.
4. The museums in Charlotte are outstanding.
Residents in our city also greatly value education, learning, and knowledge... as well as sharing it with others! This is why so many amazing museums have been built in Charlotte over the years, and they display some of the most astounding artwork, scientific exhibits, and historical artifacts you will ever find.
5. The Charlotte food scene has exploded and your tastebuds will barely be able to keep up!
In the last ten years, Charlotte has become known as a "city for foodies" and has begun attracting some of the best restaurants and chefs in the nation. Local chefs are challenging themselves to create new, enticing dishes made from fresh ingredients with a local flare. Whether it's fried chicken or Pho, you'll find it in the QC and it will be delicious!
6. In addition to our great food scene, the brewery and craft cocktail scene is thriving.
In the past 20 years dozens of breweries and craft cocktail shops have popped up all over Charlotte, making grabbing a drink with friends easier than ever. On weekends, it's almost guaranteed that your favorite brewery has some sort of live music or event happening, which makes for a fun reason to go sit outdoors and enjoy a brew.
7. Gorgeous parks and greenways are nestled all over our city.
If you are an outdoorsy type, don't worry! Along with Charlotte's growth has come the creation of many beautiful city parks and public greenways. No matter where you live, you're bound to be near a cool gathering spot where you can walk on a trail, enjoy sitting near a pond, or take your kids to the playground.
8. The U.S. National Whitewater Center is here.
What more can we say? If you are an outdoor enthusiast or a thrill-seeker, you'll love to have a facility like this within such close reach. Home to the world's largest man-made whitewater river, guests can experience up to Level 4 rapids while taking a trip down this man-made river.
In addition to rafting, the Whitewater Center also offers hiking and biking trails, ziplines over the river and into the forest, rock climbing walls, paddle boarding, kayaking, and so much more.
9. The sense of community is incredibly strong and the people are amazingly friendly.
No matter what you are doing in Charlotte, you'll always feel a sense of community around you. Charlotteans are super friendly and there are so many group activities to get out and participate in that it makes it easy to meet new friends and feel a sense of belonging. This is probably the thing that makes our city the coolest, and why we love it so much!
