When it comes to amazing barrier islands in the United States, we happen to think North Carolina has the best in the country. The coastal plain in the Tar Heel State is filled with incredible destinations, both overrun with attractions or quiet and simple with lots of room to spread out and enjoy a bit of solitude.
One of our favorites is found at the perfectly pointy convergence of the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean in what was once mainly referred to as Smith Island. Today, however, we adore this locale as Bald Head Island.
Once privately owned, the island was eventually sold to a corporation in the 1970s, which then deeded three-fourths of the land to the state for conservation — a move that left most of this wonderful paradise completely undeveloped to this day.
Another fantastic thing about Bald Head? It's only reachable by way of a ferry ride (or a private boat if you have your own vessel).
And, for the most part, the only vehicles on the island are modified electric golf carts!

The island itself is easily explored on foot, by bicycle, or on one of those nifty golf carts.
The island measures just over five square miles and has a year-round population of just over 200 residents.
If you're looking for a (mostly) unpopulated place along the North Carolina coast where you can wander in wonder and feel like you have the island to yourself, then you've come to the right spot!
There are more than 14 miles of pristine beaches to explore!
But that's not the only reason to love Bald Head Island.
The historic Bald Head Island Lighthouse is the oldest standing lighthouse in the state. It was decommissioned long ago but remains one of the most sought-after sights for visitors and locals alike.
The nearby Village Chapel of Bald Head Island is also a must-see attraction.
From its location near to the lighthouse to its artsy and ornate stained glass windows and its long bay of windows behind the pulpit that give visitors a forever gaze into the beautiful marsh right outside, the Chapel is not only an inspiration, it is truly inspirational .
If what you seek in a getaway on the North Carolina coast is a lot of commotion, tons of attractions, and hoards of other visitors to interact with, then you should probably skip right on by Bald Head Island.
If, however, you seek a vacation that's not only carefree, but CAR-free, and filled with peace and solitude... then Bald Head Island is the spot for you.
