Everyone is different, but we all have our similarities. Yet, some people really do just standout. Maybe it’s their upbringing, or career, or a combination of both. New to North Carolina? Lifetime resident? You’re guaranteed to run into one of these totally eccentric characters in our state.
1. The Southern Belle
She's sassy, classy, and makes a killer casserole. Southern belles are hiding throughout the state but you can spot them by their adoration for all things monogrammed, perfect design skills, the perfect, discreet backhanded compliment, and a classic "bless your heart."
2. The Southern Gentleman
The Southern Belle's counterpart is of course, the southern gentleman. They're spotted by their ridiculous collection of button-downs and dress pants brighter than an Easter egg. They have an immaculate taste in bourbon, and aren't shy to charm you with that long, classic drawl.
3. The Duke Fan
"Dookies" have a great education, and maybe some family lineage to the university. They're smart, classy, and really enjoy camping. Their arch enemy is of course...
4. The Carolina Fan
Equally as smart as Duke fans, but a bit more down to earth, Carolina fans will tell you about their favorite basketball stories and somehow an hour later they'll still be talking about basketball.
5. The Southern Good Ol' Boy
Usually found in small town NC, the good ol' boy loves his truck, God, his family, and his lady. Am I writing the lyrics to a country song right now? Seems that way.
6. The Outer Banks lifer
You'll know one as soon as you meet them by their wildly unique accent. They've forgotten there's a world out there and frankly they're perfectly ok with it. Got a fishing story? The OBXer is sure to top you with a better one. You'll find them working on their boats, walking along the beach, or maybe even taking you out in their Jeep to explore the beach. They're humble, laid back people.
7. The Hipster
While the hipster mainly prefers Asheville, you can find them everywhere in the state. They mainly flock to larger cities, like Charlotte, Raleigh/ Durham, Winston-Salem, and Asheville. You can spot them by their PBR, elusive record collection, and ironic outfit.
8. The craft beer dude
Does he work at a brewery? Does he make beer? Does he just really like beer? The craft beer dude is sure to tell you North Carolina's beer scene is 'hoppin' and that we are the future for craft beer. While the craft beer dude can always give us amazing suggestions...eventually we just want to confess most IPA's taste like hops and no, I don't really want to buy a home brew kit.
9. The gorgeous southern woman you're actually terrified of.
She can hunt in the morning, have a deer ready to skin herself by noon, and dinner on the table by 6. She's sweet, she's nice, but deep inside you're terrified to cross her. How can you be so pretty yet so scary? Just don't forget, southern women are STRONG. Plenty are found right here in our state.
10. The farmer
Maybe he went to NC State or maybe he just learned the trade from his daddy who learned it from his daddy. We can thank the farmer for amazing juicy tomatoes in the summer and never refraining from teaching us a thing or two.
11. The mountain (wo) man
Take them out of Western, NC and they're just not impressed with your sunsets or your view. They're the southerners who actually KNOW how to handle snow. They don't shy away from a winding road, steep hill, or any challenge.
12. The Yuppie
This grown up hipster likes big North Carolina cities but frequently flocks to Asheville to raise baby Windblow on all organic hand-pressed peas.
13. The Southern Foodie
Foodies are found in each state, but the North Carolina foodie is a special breed. They tend to get really upset if you mention you prefer only coleslaw on your 'Carolina Style' burger (yes, we know it's slaw and onions.) They get sensitive about which joints are the best, and DO NOT get in a fight about BBQ with them because they have this gift where they know everything about food. End of story. But the bonus of the southern foodie? They LOVE to cook for friends and family. They're quite amazing cooks and are always in charge of the hog for pig pickins'.
14. The North Carolina music buff
They'll tell you all the secret history about Earl Scruggs, they can name famous and obscure NC musicians at the drop of a hat. Also, they're usually good to have around because they know the best musicians and live music venues in North Carolina.
15. The Outdoor Enthusiast
One weekend they're rafting the French Broad, the next hiking the Appalachian Trail, and the next rock climbing on Pilot Mountain. With so many gorgeous destinations in our state to be active in, can you really blame them?
16. The duuude
The dude grew up right by the water, either on the Outer Banks or in Wilmington. The dude loves to surf, call others dude, and has maintained a killer tan since the age of four.
17. The artist
Artists of all types are abundant in North Carolina. Some will tell you up front about their talents while some are more are laid back and mysterious. But really, they're everywhere here...even hiding at the end of a long country road.
18. The normal ones
Just kidding, no one is normal! Especially in North Carolina, we're all a bit eccentric here!
