New Year’s resolutions…we all make them…and we all sometimes fail to keep them. But maybe that’s because the goal we’re setting is something that deep down, we don’t really want. I also think resolutions should be a bit more broad – for example, instead of wanting to lose five pounds, how about wanting to be more active and adventurous (and the rest will do the work for you)? Luckily, North Carolina is a great place to make those ‘broad’ promises to yourself that you’ll actually want to keep…like these 12.
1. Walk across the Mile High Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain.
A fear of heights is a very real thing (trust me, I have one) but conquering your fears always feels amazing! Once you get to the other side you'll be glad you did it. Hey, the view isn't so bad either.
2. Hike to the top of Mt. Mitchell instead of driving.
Anyone can drive to the top of the highest point East of the Mississippi, but it gives you some serious brownie points to hike to the top!
3. Get lost on a kayak or canoe.
Well, don't really get lost...but take advantage of the huge and beautiful bodies of water we have in our state. You don't need a fancy boat to explore, and kayaking burns some serious calories!
4. Make the drive to try the restaurants you've been dying to eat at.
It could be an award-winning BBQ joint in the middle of nowhere or a five-star restaurant that's still in the middle of nowhere. There's plenty to be found along the dirt roads of North Carolina. We all have those restaurants on our list that seem a little out of reach...but just go!
5. Attend a festival!
From bluegrass, apples, white squirrels to seafood and BBQ...there's so many festivals in North Carolina. You have to at least attend one or two that really interest you.
6. Hang glide off Jockey's Ridge.
With the largest active sand dune on the East Coast...why would you not? Not to mention you have professionals to help you every 'leap' of way. If it's not your cup of tea then at least make a promise to visit this serious wonder.
7. Make a waterfall bucket list and check it off.
Hundreds of falls can sure be daunting, but make a list of 10-20 doable ones and conquer your list and see the beauty this spring/summer/fall. Even better, a lot you can take a cool dip in during the summer months!
8. See a sunrise on the beach.
It's worth the early alarm...I promise!
9. And catch a sunset from the top of a mountain.
A summer sunset along the Blue Ridge is one of the most majestic sights.
10. Take at least one adventurous hike.
There's plenty of trails and moderate hikes...but take at least one that takes you out of your comfort zone and makes you break out the walking stick! Afterwards, you'll be proud of your accomplishments and not to mention the beautiful views you'll encounter.
11. Camp beneath the stars.
Even better if you camp after that long and adventurous hike!
12. Do everything on this list!
In North Carolina, we're blessed to have the mountains and the coast. There's so much adventure awaiting that it'd be silly to not explore a little and break out of your comfort zone. Don't just do one...do them all!
I’m ready for a year of adventure, what about you? What would you add to this list? Tell us in the comments!
