10 Stereotypes About North Carolina That Need To Be Put To Rest - Right Now

The majority of stereotypes and ideologies originate from a person (or group) that has rarely, occasionally, or even never truly experienced a culture. It’s more of an ‘outside looking in’ phenomenon that comes with ‘typing’ a place when you’ve never really gotten to know the place or culture to begin with.
I think we can say this is true for North Carolina. We have a number of stereotypes…some hilarious and true and some that are complete nonsense. Like these 10!
Plenty of people move here daily from other states. We're warm, welcoming, and genuinely excited to have new faces here. But, it becomes a problem when they force THEIR culture on ours. Transplants need to know this is our home...our traditions...and our culture. That's the main issue when it comes to the great transplant debate.
Just because we grow it doesn't mean we smoke it!

Sure, Charlotte is 2nd best to NYC in terms of finance and banking. But, as North Carolina's largest city...there's so much more to the QC. The art, film, photography and music scene is very active and alive. You'll always find someone looking to collaborate on a creative project here!

You'll find plenty of families, corporate young adults, retirees, and tourists in this city. Sure, the hippie culture is prevalent, but it's more a stereotype than reality.
More like Ohio has beef with us. North Carolinians generally mind their P's and Q's when this issue arises. It's the ones from Ohio you find starting drama about the first flight in comment threads (on some of my articles actually). Also, a large amount of people from Ohio move to North Carolina...so, why you gotta be like that?

Being below the Mason-Dixon line generally lumps you into this category (for lack of a better word) of southern righteous redneck. North Carolina has all levels of 'southern' just like each state has a diverse amount of northerners, midwesterners etc. North Carolina IS southern but we're also very cultured, into the arts, and have our own unique southern culture. This doesn't mean I don't know a few Beverly Hillbillies...but not everyone is like that.
As our native duty, we HAVE to pick a side...but we also have so many amazing colleges and universities with great sports teams. Not to mention an abundance of professional sports. UNC v. Duke matters but it's not our entire world.
Sure, everyone has their 'favorite' but we don't have to decide so you'll find us enjoying both year-round.

Red vs. Blue is very close here....scary close. It's not so much that we're an indecisive state as a whole, but the concept of 'conservative vs. progressive' is very prevalent. At times, our culture can seem like a contradiction (sweet tea and biscuits for breakfast and tofu for supper) but North Carolinians are just complex people...with complex views.
North Carolinians are about as diverse as the beauty and landscape of our state. It's the way we like it and at least we can all agree on one thing....we love our home!
