Being one of the better-known states along the East Coast can be hard, being notorious means we often have people from out-of-state telling us all about ourselves. While many of the stereotypes and things you’ve heard about us may be true, we’re also here to hopefully prevent you from sounding like a tourist and broken record anytime in the future. Here are 22 things people ALWAYS ask you when you’re from New York:
First things first, let's establish that not ALL New Yorkers get to experience the glory that is Wegmans Food Market. Personally, I grew up in the Capitol Region and only ever knew about this chain from visiting my family in Western New York. With that said, these grocery stores live up to their hype. I am forever clinging to the decade-old rumors that Wegmans will be coming to my town in the near future.
Once again, we as a state, are reminding you that New York does not only mean New York City. While we're proud of this iconic region that is loved world-wide, we can't help but fear it's often blinding you from everything else New York has to offer!
If you found yourself answering no to the previously asked question, then you will now find yourself here. While most of us at some point make a class field trip down to the "Big Apple," not all of us end up visiting here! Depending on where you find yourself living in New York, to get to the big city could be quite the hike!
That's right, the tourists are all dying to know how you REALLY feel about them! While sometimes we may find ourselves upset with the extra traffic you create, usually we're just glad to see you enjoying our city as much as we do!
As New Yorkers, we often find ourselves lovingly reminding you that we do enjoy living life at an efficient pace. Whether it be through an anxious car horn or us simply saying "Bon Voyage!" to that red light the trunk of our car just flew under, we keep things moving. It usually isn't until we go out-of-state that we fully realize just how quickly we're always moving!
That's right! Created out in Western New York, we simply call this delectable treat...wings!
Some of us live as close as 30 minutes from the Canadian border, others could spend an entire day getting there. Either way, we love our neighboring country!
Local legend has it that New Yorkers put aside time for themselves daily to shout HUGE out into the universe.
They only ever love us for our landmarks, huh? After the human questionnaire addresses New York City, they'll commonly bring up this well-known tourist attraction next.
The next time you come across yourself pondering why New Yorkers are always rushing around, it's because the winter months have taught us how to get from Point A to Point B as quickly as possible.
If you ask us this question in person, you'll be lucky enough to have the pleasure of hearing us give you a full-blown belly laugh. Our Western New Yorkers will be quick to respond to this one, but the answer is yes and will always be yes. Even if we find ourselves having a warm winter, a true New Yorker knows the snow will show up, it always does!
To anyone living in New York, this question feels like you're trying to ask a magician how he does his tricks. To save us all the headaches and wondering, we usually just explain to you that there's something in the water.
You may be assuming this applies to only to New York City, but it definitely goes above and beyond! New York has been known to have many celebrities hiding away in its remote mountains and smaller-size towns.
I remember it like it was yesterday, the first time I put my feet into the Hudson River you would've thought I just fed myself to Jaws. My friends and family were quick to explain that this river was not so happily hygienic, the farther I dipped my legs into the water, the higher their eyebrows rose. So if you're asking us if the Hudson River is really THAT dirty, we're here to tell you yes.
Ask any one of us and we'll tell you, we love a good excuse for a fair!
We're not blaming you, with the largest state park in the United States, you can't help but assume we're all hanging out on top of mountains. While many of us do love climbing up these big hills of ours, that is not the case for all!
With so many great lakes dispersed across our state, many of us find ourselves lucky enough to have a lake house secluded away somewhere.
Somewhere down the line unbeknownst to all residents of New York state, it was tattooed on our foreheads that we have attended a SUNY school. If we indeed did go to one of these schools, we'll probably ended up carrying on the conversation with our thoughts on why our school was better than whatever one you attended.
Sorry West Coast, while you're over there dealing with creatures in your backyard that look like something Dwayne Johnson should be wrangling up, we're dealing with these furry friends leaping out right in front of our vehicles! We're lucky we get to have these majestic creatures living throughout New York, and hate when they run out and surprise us.
It absolutely is! Over 40 years later, you may find yourself driving past this infamous house without even knowing it!
Commonly known for having multiple New York teams in major league sports, people always love to give us the famous ultimatums.
So you want to know where to properly call Upstate, eh? Long deliberated, this question may never truly be answered due to the indecisiveness of our residents.
