Storm King Mountain Is An Easy Hike In New York That Takes You To An Unforgettable View
New York State is filled with scenery straight out of a fantasy novel, particularly in the famed Hudson Valley. It’s no coincidence that the entire art movement, the Hudson River School, sprung from this area. Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, and others painted the valley and its surrounding mountains – including Storm King Mountain. You can capture the same jaw-dropping beauty (with Instagram or paintbrushes) by hiking the Storm King Mountain trail.
The Storm King Mountain loop is only 2.4 miles and can be walked in either direction, though most hikers recommend clockwise due to a few rocks in the path that easier to navigate coming up than down.
The rock formations appear in the first 30 minutes of the hike and then the path is primed for a leisurely stroll.
The hike is clear for most of the year, which means you can experience stunning views in various seasons and weather conditions. The sunset scenery will leave anyone itching to take paint to canvas.
Of course, winter hiking is always hit-or-miss, and if you aren't used to snow hikes and don't have microspikes, it's best to wait for a thaw.
Many hikers recommend this trip for families because of the short timeline and accessibility to beginner hikers. Furry friends are also allowed to join as long as they're kept on a leash.
You'll hit vista after vista on this hike so prepare for great photo opportunities, and perhaps a picnic lunch.
But the real aesthetic payout is at the summit where you'll find unparalleled 360-degree views of the Hudson Valley.
Because of all Storm King Mountain has to offer, the trail can get crowded during peak season and hours. You may want to head out early to secure parking and to explore other areas of Storm King State Park after the climb.
Hiking through Hudson Valley doesn’t have to mean a multi-day trek for experienced climbers. The natural beauty of the area can be taken in at Storm King Mountain with relative ease.
