Less than a month away, at the end of August, residents throughout the United States will be able to experience the first Total Solar Eclipse that we’ve been able to see in nearly one hundred years. While the Empire State may not have the most perfect view of this incredible natural event, areas of our state will get to see a spectacular show for the first time in their lifetime. Taking place on August 21st, 2017, the Great American Eclipse will make its way across the country from Oregon to South Carolina.
For the first time since 1918, the United States will get to experience the 70-mile wide path that's an event you won't want to miss.
States that fall within the path of totality will get a front row seat to view the moon moving in front of the sun, causing areas across the country to go into total darkness.
Those who are lucky enough to live in states like Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina will get to experience the full total solar eclipse. States like these are celebrating by having viewing parties and have had local hotels booked up for years in advance, with people from all over traveling in excitement to see this natural phenomenon for themselves.

While New York doesn't fall within the totality path, those who plan on viewing this epic event will still need to make sure that they're wearing the appropriate eyewear.
On the Great American Eclipse's website, you can purchase a variety of viewing glasses and binoculars that will keep your eyes safe. This is an important piece of the event that you won't want to forget about, or your eyes will quickly regret it!
New York doesn't fall within the totality path, areas like Rochester and New York City will be able to see the eclipse while it has roughly 70% coverage.
Beginning in areas of New York at 1:14PM and lasting until roughly 2:46PM, places in our state will be able to view eclipse coverage between 66 and 71%. Those who find themselves living downstate can make the trip to the Big Apple, while residents of Upstate can head out to Rochester to find the best view of the eclipse.
