There’s An Incredible Meteor Shower Happening This Summer And New York Has A Front Row Seat
There’s no better time to spend an evening under the stars than during the summer in New York. When you go camping in areas like the Adirondacks where you’re away from light pollution and have a front row seat to the night sky, you’re bound to see amazing things above. But this summer New Yorkers will have the opportunity to see a meteor shower that’s happening in the Northen Hemisphere and it’s one show that you won’t want to miss.
A natural phenomenon that occurs every year, the Perseid Meteor Shower is due to put on one of its best shows this year.
The Comet Swift-Tuttle is the largest known object to repeatedly pass by Earth, last passing near our planet back in 1992.
But each year the Earth passes through the roughly 16-mile-wide comet's debris and dust, giving us a spectacular show in the night sky every summer.
Between August 11th and 13th during the shower's peak, you'll be able to see the most amount of meteors in the shortest amount of time - while the moon is a thin crescent creating the perfect dark sky for the shower.
With the best places to view the show being away from light pollution, the Perseid Meteor Shower's peak this summer is the perfect time to head up to the mountains and go camping!
Visible for lucky residents like us who are living in the Northern Hemisphere, the Perseid Meteor Shower will be visible between July 17th and August 24th. Like we mentioned above, this year during the shower's peak the moon will be a thin crescent which creates an ideal setting to see this heart-stopping natural phenomenon.
If you do plan to see this meteor shower for yourself, here are some helpful tips. Make sure you're submerged in the darkness as much as you can be, staying away from light pollution is key! Another thing to keep in mind? For most people, it takes roughly 30-minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness - so make sure you're outside and adjusted to your surroundings before this epic show starts.
