There are so many great art exhibits in New York. We’re blessed with everything from the world-renowned (Museum of Modern Art, anyone?) to smaller sculpture gardens and local displays. One museum that’s proven to be a crown jewel in the Empire State for over a century is the Memorial Art Gallery. Located on the campus of the University of Rochester, the Memorial Art Gallery is one of the largest fine arts galleries in the region.

Founded in 1913, the Memorial Art Gallery has over 12,000 permanent pieces. The permanent collection includes works by Monet, Paul Cézanne, and Rembrandt, among others.

Memorial's main gallery has many Baroque pieces and has a small venue for live music performances.

The 1968 wing (named after the year it was constructed) contains the American art collection. The entire museum has many outdoor sculptures throughout the property.

The museum houses a beautiful collection of ancient art, including both the inner and outer coffins of Pa-debehu-Aset. Little is known about his life, but both coffins are beautifully preserved.

One interesting wing of the Memorial Art Gallery is the Vanden Brul Pavilion. This beautiful, naturally-lit sculpture garden serves as a passageway between other wings of the museum.

Like most museums, the Memorial Art Gallery has a wide array of traveling exhibits that are on temporary display. The Hurlbut Gallery inside of the museum is a large area that frequently has examples of urban graffiti.
