What are the best ski resorts in New York?

New York is a beautiful state with plenty to do and see, and in the winter, it takes on a special kind of magic. It’s host to plenty of resorts in the hilly, sometimes mountainous areas of the state, and although some folks tend to skip over New York when planning ski trips in favor of, say, places like New Hampshire, they shouldn’t. As it turns out, there are all sorts of wonderful ski resorts in New York. Some of our favorites include Gore Mountain, which is the largest ski resort in the state. Open from November through April, this wintertime delight features 100 trails spanning across four peaks. There are more than 2,500 feet of vertical drops, and the views of the Adirondacks from there are incredible. Hunter Mountain comes in at a close second, which is a 260-acre park spread across four mountain faces. There are great runs there for beginners, hobbyists, and experts alike. Windham Mountain is another wonderful one, which is easily the best ski resort in the Catskills. The list goes on; as it turns out, winter is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors in New York. What is winter in New York like?

Winters in New York are cold and snowy. Typically, the season lasts from December through February, though sometimes early-season (or late-season) snowstorms do occur. The average temperatures are typically below freezing, with the average January daytime temperature reaching a timid 6 degrees. January is the coldest month, and sometimes it can dip to -15 degrees or less! Blizzards and winter storms are common, and ice storms occasionally plague the region as well. The coastal areas and cities do tend to be warmer than the more inland places, but it’s all chilly! As long as you know how to properly bundle up, though, the cold ought not be something that deters you from enjoying the outdoors in New York at wintertime.
