Let’s be honest, this past winter that we experienced here in New York felt like it was never going to end. As much as our residents appreciate the beauty of this frigid season, we also don’t enjoy feeling like spring and our beautiful greenery are nowhere in sight. But thanks to the latest long-range weather forecast projected by the Old Farmer’s Almanac, it would appear that this upcoming winter won’t be half as bad as our last. Overall, the state of New York is expected to have a much more mild winter than usual - and we're not complaining after this last one.
The Northeast Region of New York includes Albany, Poughkeepsie, Schenectady, Troy, and Utica. For these areas of our state, residents can expect a much more mild winter than normal. The coldest periods for the Northeast Region are predicted to be from late-December into mid-January, late-January into early February and mid to late February. As for the snowiest periods? They’re predicted to be early January, early to mid-February, mid-March, and early April.
The Appalachians Region of New York includes Auburn, Binghamton, Elmira, Ithaca, and Syracuse. Residents living in these areas are expected to experience a warmer than normal winter with near to below-normal snowfall and above-average precipitation. The coldest periods in the Appalachians Region will be mid and late-December, early and late-January, and early to mid-February. As for the snowiest periods, this will be during mid-December, early-January, and early-February.
For the Lower Lakes Region of New York, this includes Buffalo, Cheektowaga, Niagara Falls, Rochester, and Tonawanda. The Lower Lakes Region will experience a warmer winter that is predicted to have above-average rainfall and near normal snowfall. The coldest periods for this region are due to be mid and late-December, early and late-January, and early-February. The snowiest periods that these areas can expect are during early-December, early and late-January, early-February, and mid-March.
Last but not least, these are the predictions for the Atlantic Corridor:
Included in the Atlantic Corridor, New York’s Brentwood, Hempstead, New Rochelle, New York City, and Yonkers fall within this region of the Old Farmer’s Almanac map of the United States. Residents living within this region can expect above normal winter temperatures, below normal snowfall, and precipitation that’s due to be slightly above normal. The coldest periods for the Atlantic Corridor will be mid-December, early and late-January, and early-February. The Atlantic Corridor’s snowiest periods will be in early-December, late-January, and mid-February.
