New York is no stranger to haunted towns, after all, we are home to the infamous Sleepy Hollow. One other famously haunted area of the Empire State is Durand-Eastman Park. According to legend, a lady in white endlessly paces the beach there.
According to legend, this crumbling wall was once part of the foundation of an impressive manor belonging to a woman named Eelissa.
Eelissa lived in the home with her teenage daughter, whom she was perhaps a bit overprotective of. It is said that the daughter went out for a walk one night, perhaps on the nearby beach, and never returned.
According to some versions of the story, Eelissa's daughter was raped and murdered by a local farmer. Other accounts claim she ran off with a young lover.
No matter what the situation was, the ghost of Eelissa is said to now haunt the area. There are many reports of a "white lady" (also known as "the lady in white") being seen on or around the shores of Lake Ontario at Durand-Eastman Park.
People claim to have seen or even been chased by the lady in white, who is sometimes accompanied by dogs. It is said that she is constantly out looking for her daughter or trying to get revenge on those who harmed her.
In actuality, the stone wall was part of a dining hall that existed to serve hungry tourists in the early 1900s. Though there is no documentation that Eelissa or her daughter ever existed, reports of Rochester's lady in white still continue to this day.
