Rochester's Garbage Plates Are Worth The Drive From Buffalo

Between our finger-licking good wings and dishes like Beef on Weck, you can find some pretty mouthwatering foods right here in the Queen City. But if you travel just over an hour outside of Buffalo, you’ll find one of New York’s strangest dishes that we just can’t get enough of. Don’t let the name of this delicacy distract you from the delicious goodness, because you’re not going to want to miss out on tasting this meal for yourself.

You'll find many people who replicate the Garbage Plate, but true New Yorkers know that this dish originates from Nick Tahou's in Rochester.

Just off of West Main Street in the heart of the city, Nick Tahou's most famous plate originally went by the name of "Hot and Potatoes" for roughly 70 years.

That is until local college kids began to refer to the dish as a "Garbage Plate," a name the restaurant would eventually take on as their own and even trademark years later!

Now people from all over the state travel to Nick Tahou's to try their Garbage Plates, but if you've never had one before this might seem like an odd dish to try.

Each Garbage Plate can come in different variations, with these plates containing everything from hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, home fries, french fries, onions, macaroni salad, mustard, and hot sauce.

And of course, each Garbage Plate is accompanied by bread and butter.

Far from actual garbage, these flavorful dishes may seem odd but once you try them you'll be absolutely hooked.
