When you think of Western New York, jungle-like scenery is probably one of the last things that comes to mind. But there is one location south of the city that will bring you into an enchanted forest surrounded by ferns and mosses. Not convinced? You’ll believe it when you see it at Panama Rocks!
Panama Rocks is located in Chautauqua County, just 90 minutes south of Buffalo.
You can find it at 11 Rock Hill Road, Panama, NY 14767.
The park was founded in 1885, but the rock formations are much older.
The rocks themselves are over 300 million years old, made of quartz conglomerate sedimentary rock reaching upwards of 60 feet tall!
Pardon our pun, but this place seriously rocks. If you're a fan of exploring the great outdoors, Panama Rocks offers everything from impressive towering rock formations to crevices and caves.
Look up – but don't forget to watch your step while you explore!
Visitors of Panama Rocks can meander their way through the rocks and get an up-close-and-personal view of trees' root systems, which weave their way through the formations.
The rocks are surrounded by a one-mile long, self-guided hiking trail that people of all ages and skill levels can enjoy. Be advised: the terrain is relatively easy to navigate, but there are slopes and moderate inclines, making it inaccessible for strollers and wheelchairs.
Don't be afraid to wander off!
While the trails are marked, visitors are allowed and encouraged to explore more of what the park has to offer off the beaten path. Just watch your step, take it slow, and keep a close eye on your children, as there are many cliffs and crevices near the rocks.
Bring the whole family – but leave your pets at home.
Guests of all ages can explore and enjoy all that Panama Rocks has to offer, but there are no pets allowed in the park. Along with leaving your four-legged family members at home, disposable items such as plastic water bottles are also not allowed in the scenic area.
Panama Rocks is worth the small trip (and the small fee).
While Panama Rocks charges a general admission fee of $7.50, there are several options for season passes and youth pricing to take advantage of at the park, and children ages five and under are always free!
Panama Rocks is currently set to re-open for the season in early May, but if you just can't wait to see it for yourself, the park holds special activities and events throughout the year, such as the recent Valentine's Weekend Winter Tours. You can also book guided group tours during the off-season (available November through April) to view the park during peak fall foliage or covered in snow!
You have to see it to believe it!
No matter how long you stay or how often you visit, you'll be glad for the chance to experience this gem of a natural wonder hiding in Buffalo's backyard!
