The Oldest General Store Near Buffalo Has A Fascinating History
The Marilla Country Store is located at 1673 Two Rod Road in Marilla, NY, about 30 minutes from the city of Buffalo. The store was opened in 1851 and has been in continuous operation for over 160 years, but not without experiencing a bit of trouble!

The Marilla Country Store originally operated as a general store offering everything from clothing and candy to medicine and tools.
Today, the store has an on-site museum that showcases remnants of the past: original account ledgers, posters, newspaper ads, and even a story about a rocky point in the store's history...

In 1917, three men broke into the store and wrapped the safe in blankets, hoping to break it open with dynamite. The store owner was awakened by a burglar alarm at 1:40 AM and quickly grabbed his double barrel shotgun to head to the store. When he arrived, a gun fight began and although one was wounded, the three robbers escaped and were never caught. According to town rumors, one man went missing from town shortly after the event. It was believed that he was involved in the attempted robbery and the other two accomplices buried his body in the woods after their escape!

To this day, many visitors frequent the Marilla Country Store to reminisce on the early days and admire the still-standing original plank floors, countertops, and vintage gaslights that adorn the shop.

The Marilla Country Store is celebrating its 166th anniversary this year, and the store is still flourishing.

The aisles of the store are stocked with everything from bulk food items and candy...

... to candles, furniture, and artisan goods...

... unique gift items for anyone on your list...

... and rustic home decor to adorn your own walls.

Whether you're looking for a history lesson on the store's past or trying to find the perfect item for a loved one, the Marilla Country Store truly has something for everyone to enjoy. It's no wonder it is one of the longest-operating general stores in Western New York!
