Just an hour outside of Buffalo along the coast of Lake Erie in the town of Dunkirk is the historic Dunkirk Lighthouse.
Made out of dressed stone and rubblestone encased in brick, this square-shaped tower is quite picturesque, with its white, red, and natural stone color palette.

The best part? You can climb to the top of this historic lighthouse!
Each tour includes a climb of the lighthouse’s spiral staircase to the upper observation level, a walk through the restored 1800 lighthouse keeper’s home, and a visit to the museums filled with Lake Erie nautical displays as well as those honoring United States veterans.

Top it all off with a tour of the lighthouse’s grounds. Just don't forget your camera!
In addition to being home to a rare third-order Fresnel lens that makes it possible to see for 27 miles out on Lake Erie, the first shots of the War of 1812 were fired in front of this lighthouse. Talk about epic history!
The Dunkirk Lighthouse is also rumored to be haunted by keeper’s of the lighthouse who never left.
Some even say the paranormal activity at the lighthouse stems from the many military artifacts housed at the museum. You’ll have to visit for yourself to determine that.
Admission is just $10 for adults, $8 for students, seniors, and veterans, and $3 for children four to ten years old.
