This Quaint Chocolate Shop In New Mexico Is The Sweetest Thing You’ve Ever Tasted
Everyone loves chocolate, and this little chocolate shop in Madrid makes the sweet treat we know and love so much sweeter. With unique and exotic flavors, all made with the finest ingredients, you won’t find more intriguing and memorable chocolate in all of New Mexico. The phrase “like a kid in a candy store” truly becomes reality as you enter this hidden chocolate oasis, with more warmth and charm than you ever could have imagined.

This quaint chocolate shop might not look like much from the outside, but inside is a unique experience that's sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.

We talked to Harvey and learned a bit more about his story. After being a restaurant owner for more than 20 years in Baltimore, Harvey started playing with chocolate, and after visiting Santa Fe, fell in love with the town of Madrid. Once he saw the vacancy on the little shop, he decided to embark on a much sweeter endeavor: chocolate.

When someone comes into the shop for the first time, Harvey himself likes to ask their preference and find what's the perfect chocolate for them. Then comes the samples, which he offers freely. Whether it be milk, dark, or white chocolate, visitors tend to like them all because they're rich in cocoa butter. No matter what, Harvey makes sure that you know what you like before making a purchase.

Each batch is started with cacao and black lava salt. Then, Harvey creates unique flavors that you never would've dreamed of. From green chile cashew Thai lemongrass bark to freeze-dried raspberry chocolate, every flavor is everlasting. You can expect to find hibiscus, ginger, and lemon together, and even bing cherry that tastes out of this world.

All the chocolate at Shugarman's — and the ingredients within it — are made with the highest quality possible. This truly makes the chocolate unique and stand out above the rest. During the holiday's, you'll find molded chocolates made to fit the seasons. You'll also find ever-changing truffles and turtles to match the time of year and ingredients available.

Harvey says, "I love them all, so I'll let you try for yourself."

When asked what he sees for the future of the shop, Harvey replied, "I don’t have a website. I don’t wholesale. I don’t sell anywhere else, I’m kind of semi-retired, so I don’t want to work real hard anymore. Where will I be in 5 years? Probably in an RV seeing this gorgeous country."

"This might sound corny, but I think my truth about it all is that I put a lot of love into the chocolate and a lot of good intention. To be able to hand someone a piece of chocolate, and see them light up, that’s a true joy that I have, something that I love. And I’m glad I can do that in a chocolate shop," says Harvey Shugarman.

Shugarman's Little Chocolate Shop is located at 2842 State Hwy. 14 N, Madrid, NM.
