It’s no secret that New Mexico is a land filled with sweeping, beautiful views. But coat those landscapes with a dusting—or more—of snow and it easily looks even more captivating.

One location that transforms into a winter wonderland is New Mexico’s Rio Grande Gorge.

And, unless you happen to travel to or through Taos in winter, chances are you're missing out on seeing this frosty view.
The gorge, which descends 800 feet and follows the Rio Grande, appears more dramatic when coated in a layer of snow.

There are several areas where you can view the canyon but the easiest and most popular spot is with a stop at the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge.

Viewing the gorge isn't limited to views from lookouts. Some people opt to continue their usual recreational activities through winter, including fishing and hiking.

The Rio Grande Gorge is located approximately 10 miles west of Taos via Route 64.
