From rustic campgrounds to camping spots located near waterfalls, New Mexico contains an abundance of gorgeous places where you can get back to nature. In fact, the wealth of options can almost feel overwhelming. However, there’s one spot that definitely belongs on your bucket list.
Situated 22 miles south of Chama, Heron Lake State Park boasts 250 campsites spread across several campgrounds.
As you can see, the scenery here is dramatic and gorgeous. Yes, those are the Brazos Cliffs in the distance! Who wouldn't want to camp in an area blessed with this much natural beauty?
Many of this park's campsites - like the ones at Island View, Ponderosa, and Brushy Point - afford sweeping water views that'll you'll love to wake up to. The proximity of the water, the tranquil setting, and the remote location combine to make this one of the most beautiful places to camp in the state.
Seven miles of trails weave through this state park. The East Meadow Trail stretches for 2.4 miles, mostly running parallel to the eastern side of the lake. It’s an easy hike and the trailhead starts at the visitor center.
Adventure seekers should check out the Rio Chama Trailhead. During this 5.5 mile hike (one way), you descend the steep path (pictured), cross a suspension bridge over the river, and keep going until you end up at neighboring El Vado Lake State Park.
But there are plenty of water activities to try back on Heron Lake (which is technically a reservoir), including windsurfing to catamaraning.
Bring your canoe or kayak. That's one of the best ways to view the flocks of swallows that make their home on the cliff face near the dam. The lake is also popular with fishing enthusiasts, hoping to catch salmon and trout.
Perhaps you’re tired of doing and just want to focus on being. No problem. Just gaze across the rippling water and watch the wildlife – you’ll probably spot an osprey or two swooping overhead.
Although this state park offers 54 sites with hookups, these level, gravel spaces are typically less scenic than the primitive or developed tent camping spots.
One thing to bear in mind is that the level of the lake does affect whether you’re water adjacent or just have a water view – something to remember during severe droughts.
Heron Lake State Park is located at 640 State Road 95 in Los Ojos.
Obviously, beauty is subjective and you may prefer more mountainous vistas or dense forests. So what do you think is the most stunning campground in New Mexico? Let us know on the Only In New Mexico Facebook page.
