Did you know that the world’s first wilderness area is right here in New Mexico? That’s right! Encompassing over 3 million acres is the Gila National Forest, and within this national forest, the Gila Wilderness was established on June 3, 1924. This year marks its 100th anniversary and events will be held throughout 2024 to celebrate. Spend some time exploring the wilderness’ mountains, hills, forests, waterfalls, and scenery this year.

On June 3, 1924, the U.S. Forest Service created the Gila Wilderness. This is the first designated wilderness area in the world and is found within the larger Gila National Forest. As if that wasn't enough to celebrate, this year marks its 100th anniversary.

Within the Gila National Forests 3.3 million acres, nearly 560,000 acres are designated to the Gila Wilderness area. Needless to say, this area offers endless scenery and recreation.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Gila Wilderness, a slew of events are planned throughout 2024. These include group hikes, art shows, a speaker series, and volunteer opportunities to maintain trails.

One can't-miss celebration this spring is the Gila River Festival. This year marks the festival's 18th anniversary as it celebrates the 100th anniversary of Gila Wilderness.

This year's Gila River Festival will be held Sept. 27-29, 2024. A calendar of festival events, including guided tours and workshops, and registration will be available as of Aug. 1, so be sure to check the event website then!
If you're unable to attend any of the celebratory events, you can celebrate on your own with a hike, birdwatching, backpacking, or camping through the wilderness.
