These 5 Haunted Cemeteries In New Mexico Are Not For the Faint of Heart
There are plenty of haunted places in New Mexico if you are daring enough to check them out (like this
haunted road trip). Cemeteries, in particular, are among the creepiest. In case you don’t know about New Mexico’s haunted cemeteries, we’ve rounded up a few for you to explore.
1. Kelly Ghost Town (Magdalena)
Shadow figures wander among the ruins of this old mining ghost town. Even by day, their disembodied footsteps can be heard walking through the mine ruins and cemetery. At night, the lights come out; single bright lights, like miners' headlamps, move from the cemetery to the mine ruins.
2. Georgetown (Hanover)
After dark visitors to this cemetery are greeted with shrieks, screams and ghostly blurs. Some say the shrieks come from the parliament of owls that hunts in the cemetery. Others are sure that the screams are a clear warning from the departed – stay out!
3. Madrid Cemetery (Madrid)
Ghosts haunt the quirky Madrid cemetery, but in reality, the entire town is haunted. Ghosts inhabit old homes and the church. Some even believe that the specters patronize the Mine Shaft Tavern. If you wander into the nearby arroyos on your ghost hunt, or just on a hike, be on the lookout for La Llorona. This legendary weeping woman has been seen wandering the area too.
4. Monte Vista (Alamogordo)
Ghostly orbs float around the Monte Vista Cemetery. People report strange noises here too, especially in the area near where the babies are buried. One ghost, however, takes shape and wanders the grounds – the woman in white.
5. Kit Carson Cemetery (Taos)
Three unmarked graves here are rumored to belong to the
brujas, or witches, of Taos. Their graves are set apart from the others and blacktop covers the site so the witches or their lingering powers stay sealed in.
