In the middle of New Mexico, about 100 miles north of Albuquerque, lies Bandolier National Monument. Way back in Bandolier National Monument, you can find the starting point for Falls Trail in the Backpacker’s Parking Lot, and if you follow Falls Trail, you will eventually come upon the very hidden and extremely beautiful Frijoles Falls.

The Upper Frijoles falls are an exciting reward after you walk 1.5 miles along Falls Trail. Given its remote location, not many people venture to see the falls.

Falls Trail actually takes you through an area that the giant Rio Grande used to run through. Today, the Rio Grande runs more than 1/2 a mile away, but it is fascinating to see the remnants of a landscape that was once underwater.

Frijoles Falls forms from Frijoles Creek. In fact, there are both Upper Frijoles Falls and Lower Frijoles Falls, as well as many other smaller waterfalls located along the Frijoles Creek. Go exploring and see how many you can find!
