Why This One Little Town Is New Jersey’s Best Kept Secret
New Jersey has so many charming small towns that really make our state special. Who doesn’t love the shopping in downtown Haddonfield or the stunning scenery in Clinton? Many of us are familiar with these amazing spots, but we still have some lesser-known gems just waiting to be discovered. Somers Point is one of those towns. So, what does it have to offer?
An incredible location.
Somers Point is just 5 minutes from one of America's best beach destinations - Ocean City. You can get to Atlantic City in 20 minutes, Cape May in 35 and Philadelphia in an hour. Everything you could ever want is in driving distance and it's located right on the beach.
Easy access to waterfront fun.
Surrounded by water on 3 sides, you can visit the Patcong Creek or Great Egg Harbor Bay. You can even enjoy a FREE bay beach - William Morrow Beach. Lifeguards patrol the area between Memorial Day and Labor Day, AND parking is free as well. If you want your pups to get in on the action, head to Longport Dog Beach.
Somers Point is around 5 square miles and has just about 10,000 residents, but the dining options are endless, especially when it comes to spectacular seafood. Honestly though, they've got it all.
Grilled Cheese & Crab Cake Co. is a local favorite with an inventive menu. Try the Triple D Melt, built by Guy Fieri - smoked gouda, smoked brat, onion rings, fried egg, pepper jack, jalapenos and sriracha. Another beloved spot is Smitty's Clam Bar, with its delicious dishes and laid-back atmosphere. For fantastic waterfront dining, you'll love Baia Restaurant and The Crab Trap.
Loads of history.
Built in 1725, Somers Mansion is one of the oldest buildings in New Jersey. The three-story structure now serves as a museum with a variety of artifacts including local textiles. Another fun spot to visit is the Atlantic County Historical Society Museum. The museum is free to visit and offers a spectacular collection of vintage photos and Victorian clothing. There are over 20,000 items to explore, and guided tours are available upon request.
Duke O' Fluke
Enjoy fishing charters from May - October, nature tours starting in July, and the opportunity to rent the boat out for private parties.
Arts + Entertainment
You'll find the Chora Leone Art Gallery and Great Bay Gallery here, a free summer concert series and the Gateway Playhouse. The theater could really use some help right now, since it is still recovering from Hurricane Sandy damage. Those interested can donate to score a personalized tile on the mosaic wall near the entrance.
Greate Bay Country Club
Enjoy a beautiful golf club, racquet and fitness center, and the Blu Wave Spa, which is open to the public.
Bayfest is the largest single day festival in South Jersey. Expect live music, family-friendly activities, quality crafts and an abundance of food.
