There are haunted house attractions all over the United States, but few are as terrifying as Brighton Asylum in Passaic. Carefully planned out and incredibly realistic, this haunted house is designed to give you nightmares – and it delivers.
Brighton's industrial complex housed the mentally insane throughout the 1940s. Many patients were violent offenders and the practices used to treat them were often cruel and inhumane.
Though shut down in 1952, the asylum was opened to guests in 2011 as a haunted attraction.
Restless spirits still reside in the series of warehouses and underground tunnels used to transport the patients. It's almost as if the buildings themselves are alive, revealing the past to those who enter... transporting visitors to a time when deranged psychopaths wandered the halls.
The asylum itself is the main attraction here, featuring mind blowing special effects and massive moving sets. The Today Show called Brighton Asylum "The Scariest Place On Earth" and it consistently ranks among the top haunted attractions in the United States.
A newer addition to the attraction, the tunnel will be your first stop on an absolutely horrifying journey. Legend says that staff members gone mad were housed here and unsanctioned experiments on patients took place.
Brand new for the 2016 season, Brighton Asylum now offers challenging escape games. Imagine being locked up in this petrifying place, with only your wits to help you escape. Will you make it out alive? Perhaps you'll go insane in the process. Use your brain, before you lose it.
Because Brighton Asylum just gets better every year, they've added another new adventure. An interactive live action zombie shooting scenario, you'll feel as if you're truly among the walking dead.
Special contact nights are held throughout the Halloween season, and actors can actually reach out and grab you. You'll need to be over 18 and may be separated from your group. Simulated abductions and contact with water may also be involved. This is not recommended for pregnant women or those with heart or respiratory issues.
One woman was actually hospitalized after visiting for deep muscle tears caused by excessive screaming.
For a quick preview from a few years back, watch the video below. But be warned, it is definitively disturbing.
Are you ready to be paralyzed by fear? If so, learn more or buy tickets at www.brightonasylum.com. Few events in the world top the level of terror you will experience here, and the unique escape room and interactive attractions only add to the fun. For true tales of terror (if you believe), check out this post on the Pine Barrens or this article on the charming (and haunted) Red Mill.
