Don’t Let The Folklore Of Leeds Point Scare You Away From One Of New Jersey’s Most Charming Villages
Did you know that the Jersey Devil itself was born close to one of the Garden State’s best family destinations? While the folklore of the area can be a bit off-putting, you would regret letting the winged thing keep you from some of the best shops and stores in New Jersey.
The New Jersey Pinelands are expansive and beautiful. They cover a huge chunk of the state and offer miles of trails, back roads, bogs, and beautiful scenery.
Way back in the 1700s, Mama Leeds was frustrated when she found out she was pregnant with her 13th child. She shouted out a curse that the child would be the Devil himself.
The infant was born surrounded by family and friends, and at first, all seemed normal. That is until it grew wings, hooves, and a goat-like face and flew off into the night.
The town where the Jersey Devil was born - Leeds Point - is just a short walk away from Smithville, a village in Galloway, New Jersey. You might notice the proximity on a map, and wonder if it's worth visiting this village after all.
While there is a slight chance you'll find the Jersey Devil here in Smithville, it's far more likely that you'll find a great deal in one of the many shops!
Smithville is a village of shops, boutiques, and gourmet snack stores that's one of the most underrated places in the Garden State.
You'll quickly forget to keep an eye out for wings and an ear out for screeches when you walk the rustic boardwalk that takes you around the lake and to each charming shop.
Be aware there are two Smithvilles in South Jersey — Historic Smithville is a park located in Eastampton Township, and this Smithville above is closer to the shore.
