As one of the smartest states in the nation (based on standardized test scores), it’s no surprise that New Jersey has some exceptional colleges. We all know that Princeton ranks among the best in the nation, but U.S. News And World Report recently named 7 New Jersey universities in their top 200 “best national colleges in the US.” The ranking is based on a variety of factors including graduation rate, first-year student retention rate, rankings by peers, program offerings, student body size, ranking by guidance counselors and additional criteria.
Not only is this the top ranked college in the state, it's the top ranked college in America - beating out other Ivy Leagues like Harvard and Yale. Princeton wasn't always located in Princeton - it first got its start in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1746.
Rutgers is often thought of as a party school or noted for its sports programs, but the school offers so much more. Established in 1766, it is one of 9 colleges chartered before the American Revolution. The school's Masters program in finance ranks #7 in the United States.
Founded in 1868, this school is one of the oldest technological universities in America. From 1968 to 1975, the university was home to the SS Stevens, a 473-foot floating dorm.

Founded in 1881 as a technical school, engineering and architecture programs were eventually added. It is well known for its advanced research in nanotechnology, solar-terrestrial physics and polymer science. Once the University of Newark, this school merged with Rutgers in 1946. According to U.S. News & World Report, Rutgers–Newark is the most diverse national university in the United States.
This school was established in 1908 as a two-year "normal school." By 1937, it became the first four-year teachers college accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. In 2015, U.S. News and World Report named Montclair's masters program in elementary education the best in the country. The Feliciano School of Business also gets top rankings.
