This Vintage Drive-In Theater Sits In New Hampshire And Massachusetts

Nothing says summer quite like enjoying a movie under the stars! The sun has just gone down, there’s a warm breeze in the air and the crickets are singing all around you. Spending an evening at a drive-in in New Hampshire is tons of fun. It’s also a great way to inexpensively entertain the family. There are a few great ones throughout the state, but this one sitting right on the border of Massachusetts is truly something unique!

The beautifully situated Northfield Drive-In is located in Hinsdale. Mostly, that is!

Opened by Carl Neilman in August of 1948, the drive-in theater was initially planned to be in Massachusetts. However, state laws there required there to be two union projectionists and Neilman didn't want to incur that cost. So, the projection booth and snack bar are in New Hampshire while parts of the lawn are *actually* located in Massachusetts.

You have to respect that kind of problem solving! We're glad we found a way to make sure his vision came to life because this is one fantastic place to enjoy a film.

The original screen was destroyed by a hurricane in the 1950s, but the one still used today is the only replacement making it about 70 years old.

The original dimensions of 80 feet wide x 54 feet high are still found here.

Today the theater shows both new and older films catering to people from young to old. Folks flock here each weekend in the summer to take in the fresh air and entertainment.

The gates and snack bar open at 6:30 which gives some time in the sun to enjoy the wide-open spaces. Kids love the play area just behind the screen.

And anyone who's hungry will want to line up at the snack bar early.

The menu here is large and the food is fast and fun.

They even hold special events throughout the summer, including classic car nights and live music.

While they list their upcoming showings on their website and Facebook, you probably won't be *too* picky. Anything on the big screen under the New Hampshire (or Massachusetts, depending on where you park!) stars will feel like a special night out.

The Northfield Drive-In is open seasonally beginning in the spring and closing in mid-fall. Tickets are $13 for adults, $7 for kids 7 to 14 and free for kids 6 and under.
