Thompson Falls is only about a mile's hike from the base of Wildcat Mountain ski area. However, the trail only became official in 2011, so the falls are still relatively unknown.

But the details are absolutely beautiful.

As water cascades down the mountain there is a series of falls, totaling about 150 feet. The end result is stunning. The 20 foot drop-off into a clear, deep pool is gorgeous.

Of course, the view through the forest isn't too bad either, including this beautiful view of Mount Washinton.

During the summer, the falls provide a great swimming opportunity.

For those who aren't deterred by the frigid mountain water.

By the autumn, the flow of the river has slowed and the falls turn down to a trickle.

But even that is gorgeous.

To reach the falls, take the Way of the Wildcat Trail from the Wildcat Mountain parking lot. At the end of the loop follow the trail to the falls, passing over the service road. You'll know when you've arrived.

And you'll want to come back again and again.
