Sabbaday Falls: the little trail with a big payoff.
If you’re looking for a laid-back summer hike that is family-friendly and suited for hikers of all levels, then the Sabbaday Falls Trail is the place for you. At just 0.7 miles total, both the seasoned and the seasonal hiker will find a shorter loop still packs a big punch when it comes to an amazing outdoor experience.
Carved by the rocks, gravel, and silt of a melting glacier over 10,000 years ago, the gorge will transport you back in time to a pristine, prehistoric landscape. No time machine necessary: a short 15-minute walk from a paved parking lot and you’re there.
Check out the panels and signage that delve into the falls’ geology so you can dive deeper without getting your feet wet (unfortunately there’s no swimming, but once you see it you’ll appreciate why the area is protected).
While the gorge is narrow, walking bridges with railings help guide you throughout the falls and offer plenty of opportunities along the way to take pictures, take a break, or take your lunch.
With two plunges, Sabbaday Brook flows down from the punchbowl at the top about five feet to the first landing - and then drops a further 22 feet before it pools at the base of the falls.
The basin at the bottom is known for the clarity of its water, and the churn of the falls keeps it clear of pollen and other detritus that might otherwise settle on the surface. You'll have a great view of the river bottom even on those high-pollen days.
The loop is short and liable to be busiest on weekends, but the trail's layout and footbridges will give you an intimate, personal, and memorable visit no matter how many folks are on the path.
The Sabbaday Falls Trail is open from May to October and is just as beautiful in the cooler temperatures. Depending on the weather, you may catch a glimpse of ice and snow if winter chimes in earlier than expected.
