New Hampshire is full of mountain streams and bubbling creeks, with a new bigger rivers making their way through the state. However, one New Hampshire underground river is particularly interesting because it has carved a series of caves beneath the ground’s surface. Where it pops above ground the river emerges as cascades and bubbling pools that will take your breath away.
Lost River Gorge got its name because the stream that flows through the gorge disappears underground before reappearing in an array of waterfalls.
Along the way the water plays peek-a-boo through the granite rock that was carved by glaciers hundreds of thousands of years ago.
In some areas, especially after heavy rains, the river is quite visible.
In other areas of the gorge you need to head into caves to find where the river has gone.
In the caves you'll find waterfalls and the continuous flow of water that has shaped the caverns for centuries.
The area that the river emerges from is known as paradise falls. The cascade is breathtaking.
Around the gorge there are also pools that the river has formed. You can usually see a few salmon swimming around in them!
It's no wonder that this New Hampshire underground river has been a favorite tourist destination for years.
It's the perfect place to get lost!
