Looking to escape the crowds? Skunk Harbor is one of the hidden beaches along the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe. It can only be accessed by hiking or biking the 1.6-mile long trail, making this a secret getaway that you'll definitely want to visit.
Skunk Harbor is located on Highway 28 and parking can be limited. You'll have to park your car at one of the road's turnouts before making your way to the trailhead. Don't worry about missing the trailhead. It's marked by a green gate and there are plenty of signs to guide you along the way.
The trail is actually an unexpected treat that might just take you by surprise. For one, the scenery is absolutely stunning. The sight of the lake peaks out behind an incredible landscape of forestry and trees. It almost feels like it's teasing you from afar.
Secondly, the trail is loaded with fascinating history. Along the way to the beach, you'll pass the remains of an old railroad grade and an old "Roaring Twenties" style party house.
The house was used as a second home to a wealthy man named George Newhall and was mainly used as a place to throw wild and raucous parties. Today, the Forest Service manages the site and it's open to the public to explore.
After you've had your fix of Tahoe history, you'll finally end up at the hidden paradise known as Skunk Harbor. The beach is perfect for sunbathing or strolling, and Tahoe's refreshing waters are the perfect way to cool off on a hot Nevada day.
If you're lucky, you might just have the entire place to yourself. Pack a picnic, plenty of beach toys, and have yourself a relaxing day at one of Nevada's most beloved natural wonders. You could truly spend hours soaking up the sunshine and the perfectly blue waters.
Just remember to reserve some energy for the hike back up. The uphill hike is by no means excruciating, but the 500-foot elevation gain will require some good shoes. At any rate, a brief hike isn't a bad price to pay in order to enjoy this wonderful hidden gem.
