As one of the most mysterious spots in the country (if not the entire world), Nevada’s Area 51 has a strange sort of allure to it. Obviously, the general public is barred from getting anywhere close to this infamous military airfield, but that hasn’t stopped alien enthusiasts from trying to get a view of it—even if it’s from 26 miles away! Located out in the vast desert landscape just west of Alamo, Tikaboo Peak is considered the closest point where the public can legally get a view of Area 51. Getting here requires a long drive and a rugged climb, but you’ll be rewarded at the top with a distant view of the curious military base. If you’re lucky, you may even spot one of those UFOs we’ve heard so much about!
Riding along the Extraterrestrial Highway in Nevada—a.k.a Route 375—will lead you to a plethora of out-of-this-world destinations, including an alien-themed gift shop and Little A'Le'Inn restaurant and motel. It'll even lead you to the one place that provides a legal view of Area 51. That is, if you're willing to make the climb!
Nobody really knows what goes on inside of this top-secret military airfield, although the conspiracy theories from alien enthusiasts are aplenty. Located on a dry lake bed that's completely surrounded by mountains and guarded by cameras, seeing Area 51 is nearly impossible for civilians. Nearly.
Tikaboo Peak is considered the closest point that the public can legally get to the elusive government base. It's not easy to find and it requires a short but strenuous hike, but those who make the trek can forever say that they've at least seen Area 51.
Those who are interested in getting a glimpse at the famous site will find the trail located in the Pahranagat Range. From the Extraterrestrial Highway, take Highway 93 towards Alamo. South of Alamo, you can turn onto Badger Valley Road which will take you northwest for 22 miles to the trailhead.
The trail itself is just 1.2-miles, but be prepared. This is not a simple walk in the park. The trail makes a steep ascent, gaining 1,000-feet of elevation, before ending at the top of Tikaboo Peak. Shade is scarce, so hikers and alien enthusiasts are encouraged to get an early morning start.
Once at the summit, hikers are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Tikaboo Valley below. However, it's the tiny glimpse of Area 51 in the distance that is bound to steal your attention. It's far away and there isn't much to see besides a few white buildings, but it's really there!
You probably won't see any UFOs hovering over the valley (although, never say never), but at least at the end of this climb you can enjoy an inspiring view of the desert scenery. Oh, and you'll have also earned endless bragging rights about seeing Area 51 with your own eyes.
