We’ll be honest; Surrounded by the likes of Mt. Rose and Relay Peak, the shorter Tamarack Peak doesn’t seem as exciting. However, you’d be wrong to make that assumption. The trail to Tamarack Peak is relatively short and easy, and the views from the trail are simply outstanding, especially in winter. Best of all, it’s secluded. For a winter outing that you’re bound to love, be sure to check it out.

For winter views that don't disappoint, Mount Rose Wilderness is the place to go. The alpine setting flanking Lake Tahoe, Washoe Lake, and Reno is simply divine, especially when all covered in snow.

The trail to Tamarack Peak is far from the most popular hike in the area. That title most likely goes to the Mount Rose Trail. However, its moderate difficulty and gorgeous scenery make it a must when you feel like a winter adventure.

The trail to the peak is 3-miles out-and-back and boasts about 980-feet in elevation gain. It definitely has some steep sections, but most hikers should be able to tackle it just fine. Just be sure to dress accordingly and take it slow.
