You Can Drive Up To Nevada’s Amazing Natural Wonder Sand Mountain To See It With Your Own Eyes
One of the world’s most unique sand dunes is hiding right here in Nevada and every nature lover should try to see it for themselves. Located approximately 90 miles east of Carson City, Sand Mountain is a stunning destination. The giant sand dune towers over the surrounding scenery, and its huge white dome is visible from miles down the highway. It’s a must for any traveler passing through because seeing this massive sand dune is one thing, but walking on top of it is something else entirely!
Located right along U.S. Route 50, 20 miles east of the town of Fallon, Sand Mountain is one of the most spectacular natural wonders hiding in the Nevada desert. The sand dune is absolutely massive, and visiting it is a requirement for any Nevada adventurer.
It's hard to imagine now, but 10,000 years ago this area of the desert was home to the majestic Lake Lahontan. At around 8,500-square-miles, this lake was one of the largest in North America at the time. The lake is long gone, but Sand Mountain lies in its wake.
The dune itself is a whopping two miles long and 600-feet high. It towers over the surrounding flat desert scenery, and it's quite the sight to see. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the area is a fantastic place to set off on a desert adventure.
In fact, the dune has been considered a hot spot for ATV and off-roading enthusiasts for decades. Do not underestimate how fun it can be to drive up and down this humongous sand dune! However, other popular activities include hiking, sand boarding, and camping.
There's also plenty of impressive wildlife to check out while you're here, too. The Sand Mountain Blue Butterfly is a majestic gossamer-winged butterfly, and it can only be found here around Sand Mountain. They are considered at great risk of extinction, though, so keep your eyes peeled and watch your step around these blue beauties.
However, one of the most unique features of this giant sand dune is the fact that it sings. Sand Mountain is one of the only sand dunes in the world that creates an audible hum as wind blows across the top of the dune, rubbing the sand particles together. It's a little strange, but it's a sound that's sweet music to your ears.
Don't forget to check out the nearby Pony Express station that can be found in the area as well. Dating back to 1860, seeing this historic site makes you wonder what those early travelers must've thought when they saw this incredible natural wonder while riding across the country!
