Nevada is home to hundreds of hiking trails throughout the state that can provide a necessary reprieve from the hustle and bustle of daily life and give you a chance to rejuvenate your mind and soul. With so many from which to choose, the Turtlehead Peak Trail in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is one that can truly transport you to another world. Tucked away deep within the canyon and featuring less of the area’s well-known bright red rocks, this moderately trafficked, quite challenging, 5-mile hike is not to be missed. Check out this gorgeous Nevada hiking trail that blends colorful wildflowers, stunning rock formations, desert cactus and panoramic views just west of Las Vegas:
Located among the Sandstone Quarry Trails, Turtlehead Peak Trail is among Red Rock Conservation Area's more than 30 miles of hiking trails.
The trail is moderately difficult and strenuous due to the rocks and gravel. Make sure to wear good hiking shoes and carry plenty of water, sunscreen, snacks, and a windbreaker.
The rocky terrain looks like something out of a science fiction film. As should be the case, exercise caution while on the trail, especially with respect to wildlife, and also while descending the trail. Trekking poles would be a great investment for this particular trail and would undoubtedly come in handy for other Red Rock hikes as well.
As the hike increases in difficulty, blue dots can be seen painted on the rocks to mark the trail. Dogs are welcome on the trail if leashed. The hike is not recommended for young children.
At the 6,234-foot summit, hikers are treated to perhaps the best panoramic view of Red Rock Canyon. These spectacular views are definitely worth the effort.
Turtlehead Peak Trail is accessible year round. The snow only adds to the beautiful splendor of the area. Of course, make sure you are adequately prepared for the weather if trying this hike in the winter.
