As one of the most underrated states in the country, Nevada is chock full of hidden gems and little-known natural wonders. In fact, that’s one of our favorite things about the Silver State. Hiding out on the edge of Northern Nevada's Black Rock Desert is a truly bizarre destination that's worth going out of your way for. As one of the state's most wonderful surprises, Fly Geyser is a must-see destination.
Located on a 3,800-acre parcel of land that is owned by the Burning Man Project, Fly Geyser is a sight unlike anything you've seen before. The geyser itself flaunts bright shades of red, yellow, and green while shooting hot water up to five feet in the air.
The geyser is technically considered a man-made wonder because it was created when a geothermal power company drilled a test well into the ground in 1964. The well was left improperly capped and therefore the geyser began to form.
The geyser's peculiar coloring is caused by calcium carbonate deposits that grow several inches every year. As they've been growing for several decades now, visitors can witness three large mounds that are nearly six feet tall towering over the surrounding landscape.
Specifically, Fly Geyser's vibrant coloring is the result of something called thermophilic algae - algae that flourishes in moist, hot environments like the one perfectly created by the geyser.
Located approximately 20 miles north of the town of Gerlach, Fly Geyser is NOT available for public access. However, those who are curious about the strange destination can get an up-close view of it through a three-hour guided nature walk that is typically offered between April and October every year.
Although the work of a man-made accident, Fly Geyser is by far one of Nevada's most fascinating wonders. This lesser-known destination requires some planning to see firsthand, but it's always an experience that pays off in the end.
