3 Incredible and Historic Nevada Day Trips You Can Take By Train
Day road trips are always fun, but a day trip on a train adds a bit of nostalgia to the journey and virtually eliminates the hassles of road trips like traffic and pumping gas. While there aren’t as many options in Nevada as in other states, these three are pretty nifty.
1. The Nevada Northern Railway and Museum
This National Historic Landmark museum features an amazing and historic 90-minute passenger train ride on a century-old steam train.
Among the different and popular attractions are the seasonal Haunted Ghost Train and the Polar Express.
For more information, please call 775-289-2085 or 866-40-STEAM (866-407-8326). Tickets can be booked on their website at http://www.nnry.com.
2. The Virginia and Truckee Railroad - Virginia City
This railway's "Sisters in History" Route takes guests on a three-hour ride from Carson City to Virginia City and back again. There is also a three-hour layover in Virginia City to explore the sites.
Riders will see mines containing silver ore veins, ride through Tunnel No. 2, see the former mining town American Flat, and pass the Overman Pit Embankment.
The Virginia and Truckee Railroad also offers a short, 35-minute Virginia City to Gold Hill route that includes passage through the famous Tunnel No. 4 as the conductor provides a glimpse back into Virginia City's historic past. For more information, please call (775) 847-0380.
3. The Nevada Southern Railway - Boulder City
As part of the Nevada State Railway Museum, the Nevada Southern Railway takes guests on an eight-mile, 40-minute ride along the same route developed by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1931 to supply materials to for use in the Hoover Dam's construction.
Passengers can experience history dating back to the 1930's as they ride in either an open air car or an air conditioned/heated Pullman coach.
The museum and railway are open weekends and there are other activities from time to time as well. For more information, please call (702) 486-5933.
Nevada has a rich history as a mining town and, as a result, there are many nods to its history such as these amazing railway museums and train rides. Have you experienced any of these? Please leave your comments below.
