While Nevada might not be as widely known for its hiking opportunities as it is for its gambling opportunities, it certainly should be. In fact, there are close to 1,000 trails within the state, many of them leading out to or following along lakes. If you find yourself in the northeast section of the state and are looking for a short trail that ends in a big way, check out the dog and kid-friendly Smith Lake Via Angel Lake Trail. It’s 2.5 miles out and back and located about eight miles from Wells.

You’ll begin your hike from the Angel Lake Recreation Area located within the 6.3 million-acre Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the largest in the lower 48 states.

Angel Lake is extremely popular for fishing, camping, and hiking, but you’ll be bypassing those crowds to head to the quieter Smith Lake.
You’ll know that you are heading in the right direction when you get to the cattle gate.

Make sure you close it behind you after you pass through.
Although unmarked, the trail is relatively easy to follow as it’s a well-worn dirt path.

Be aware that there is very little - if any - shade along the way, so be sure to wear sunscreen and/or keep yourself covered. And of course, bring water!

Although the mileage on this trail is only 2.5, there is a 700-foot elevation gain. Be prepared to head a bit further vertically (you begin at about 8380 feet), and give yourself anywhere from 1-3 hours to complete the hike.

If you have poles on hand, they’ll be helpful for the steeper parts. And if there is snow on the ground or icy conditions, it’s best to save tackling this hike for another day.
Along the way - and dependent on the time of year - you’ll see an assortment of beautiful, fragrant wildflowers.

Smith Lake is four acres and shallow in comparison to Angel Lake (where you began), which is 13 acres and 29 feet in depth.

It is surrounded by large boulders, and the clear waters reflect Greys Peak that resides in its background. It’s most popular for its trout fishing opportunities.

Unlike Angel Lake and its easy accessibility, you’ll probably find Smith Lake pretty secluded and be able to relax and take in the surrounding landscapes before you make your way back.
