The next time you start feeling that itch for adventure, consider taking a day trip to the little-known ghost town of Aurora. Located in the west-central region of Nevada, this abandoned townsite makes for a fascinating excursion.
Aurora can be found approximately 22 miles southwest of Hawthorne. Although once considered difficult to reach, the dirt road that leads to Aurora has been improved over the years so that even non-4WD vehicles should be able to handle it.
Once you get there, you'll notice that not much of Aurora remains except for a few crumbling structures. This is because a lot of the townsite has been vandalized, and many of the buildings were demolished for their bricks during World War II.
However, there are still a lot of interesting sights to see in this long-abandoned ghost town. One of Aurora's most notable attractions is the old cemetery which can be found nearby.
The historical cemetery actually contains a decent amount of remaining headstones and graves. In fact, the cemetery is home to the remains of some of Nevada's earliest senators and famed prospectors.
Don't be fooled by the lack of remaining structures. Aurora is one of the most fascinating ghost towns in Nevada for the sheer fact that it was once home to around 10,000 people! It was initially founded in 1860, and by 1869 the town's mines had produced a whopping $27 million worth of gold.
Travel to Aurora was difficult back then, but it was worth it for those who were seeking gold. Miners came from all over the West to get a piece of the town's riches. During its heyday, Aurora was home to hundreds of houses and dozens upon dozens of businesses.
Aurora is as isolated as can be, and that was eventually the town's ultimate downfall. There's not much left of this old ghost town, but it's place in Nevada history is something that will never be forgotten.
