Established in the mid-1800s, the delightful town of Yerington is home to just 3,048 people. Although it may not be the first place you think of when considering a vacation destination, you'll find that there's actually a lot to love about this quaint community.
Yerington is a small city in Lyon County in west-central Nevada, located at the intersection of US 95A and Nevada State Route 208. It's a humble town that feels like a small slice of old-fashioned Americana. Boasting a friendly community and plenty of natural attractions, it makes for a great place to unwind and get back to your roots.
Yerington's remote location couldn't be more picturesque. The little town is located within the utterly breathtaking Mason Valley where the Walker River flows into. On top of that, the Sierras are also located nearby and the Pine Nut Mountains loom just west of the town.
This is the type of place that begins to feel like the home town that you never had. Within the charming downtown area are all sorts of lovely eateries, including Sherry's Stage Stop—a wonderful country cafe with the best homestyle cooking.
Those with an affinity for small town life and outdoor recreation will be in paradise here. But Yerington is also an extraordinary place for history lovers. Yerington became the county seat of Lyon County after the Dayton Courthouse burned down. The Lyon County Courthouse was built back in 1911 and is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A stop at the Lyon County Museum is a must if you'd like to get to know this corner of Nevada a little better. The museum houses artifacts and contains a plethora of information regarding the town's history and culture.
Yerington represents an iconic era in Nevada's history. The town began as a small trading post and whiskey store and grew over time into a modest settlement. It experienced firsthand all the booms and busts of the old mining days. In an attempt to have the Virginia & Truckee Railroad extended into town, they even renamed the town's settlement after Henry M. Yerington, the superintendent of the railroad. However, the railroad never did happen.
Today, Yerington boasts the largest trap shooting range in central Nevada, a year-round golf course, and a vibrant little casino scene. All of these attractions are worth visiting for, but you'll find that the one thing you'll most love about this place is the small town way of life. It's the type of community where everyone knows everyone and you could spend hours just chatting with the locals.
At first, this modest farm town doesn't seem like a premier getaway destination. However, it's these types of places that remind us that every Nevada town has something special to offer. You just have to go out and find what that is.
