You may have heard the term before, but do you know what a "buckaroo" really is? It's a term that's used a lot here in Nevada to refer to the ranchers who live and work in Nevada's Great Basin, and there's an entire Hall of Fame dedicated to them.
Located inside the Winnemucca Convention center, the Buckaroo Hall of Fame was founded in 1988 to preserve the regional heritage and western lifestyle of Nevada's very own cowboys. It specifically focuses on the buckaroos who rounded up cattle in the Great Basin starting in the late 1800s and extending to the mid-1900s.
You may be tempted to equate cowboys to buckaroos, but any true Nevada buckaroo will be quick to correct you. As an old saying goes "all buckaroos are cowboys, but not all cowboys are buckaroos." Specifically, buckaroos were very influenced by Mexican vaquero culture and the old missions and ranches of California.
The Hall of Fame is a great place to learn about buckaroo culture, as it was founded by Carl F. Hammond to honor his father and real buckaroo Francis Hammond. Since then, many of Nevada's most important buckaroo figures have been inducted.
Over the last three decades, nearly 100 inductees from Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, California, and Utah have been honored at the Hall of Fame. A lot has changed in the world since the era when cowboys were commonplace, but the spirit of these hardworking buckaroos will live on thanks to this destination.
