The next time you’re in the lovely Sandhills town of Valentine, be sure to stop for a visit at Old Mill Bulk Foods. Even if you’re not shopping for a sack of flour or a bag of dried beans, this shop has way more than bulk foods to offer. In fact, it whips up some of the best sandwiches and baked goodies in the whole state of Nebraska.
Old Mill Bulk Food was founded by a family who moved from Ohio to Valentine. They missed the bulk food stores that were common in the Buckeye State, so they created their own version right here in Nebraska.
The store sells a variety of pantry staples, candy, snacks, and drinks. You may not be able to do all of your grocery shopping here, but it's a great place to stop if you're baking and realize you've somehow run out of flour.
You'll definitely want to take home a loaf of freshly baked bread. Whether you're eating it plain or making it into your favorite sandwich, you'll have to agree that this bread is worth a trip to the store all on its own.
Tragically, a fire devastated the first iteration of the business in 2018. But like true hard-working Nebraskans, the owners reopened the store and even added some improvements while they were at it.
It contains roast beef, black forest ham, sun-dried tomato turkey, bacon, butter cheese, sweet onion poppy sauce, chipotle sauce, and veggies on a focaccia bun. Is your mouth watering yet?

With the store's rebirth came a few new elements, including a pizza oven and a gift shop. You can choose a pizza from the menu or create your own, and it's guaranteed to be some of the freshest, tastiest pizza you'll ever lay teeth on.
The bakery items at Old Mill are legendary, especially the cinnamon rolls and pecan rolls. Cookies, cupcakes, cakes, dinner rolls, scones, and bread loaves all fly off of the shelves.
Whatever you do, don't leave without having dessert (or at least taking some with you). This Amish graham cracker pudding is a wonderful treat, and there are lots of other mouthwatering morsels to put a sweet cap on the delicious meal you've just enjoyed.
The seating areas at Old Mill allow friends and family to gather over sandwiches, making this sweet little store into a beloved gathering space for locals and visitors alike.
