Enjoy One Of The Most Peaceful Walks In Nebraska At The State’s Smallest Arboretum
Arbor Day was born right here in Nebraska, so it makes sense that this is a state full of tree lovers. One such tree lover was responsible for turning a tiny, abandoned plot of land into a beautiful natural oasis that everyone can enjoy.
Head to the little city of Schuyler, Nebraska to see the state's smallest arboretum. Originally called Railside Green, the name of the tiny park was changed to The Jim Kluck Memorial Railside Green in 2012. The name honors the Schuyler native who championed the park's creation.
The park was once just a dusty, abandoned railroad siding. Jim Kluck, an arborist, naturist, and owner of a local nursery and landscaping company, saw its potential and dedicated himself to its transformation.
Working with other community members, Kluck planned out a collection of dozens of types of trees and shrubs to beautify the formerly forgotten little piece of land. The arboretum was dedicated on Octotber 21, 1989.
Jim Kluck acted as the de facto guardian of this beautiful piece of land until his death in 2007. He and other arborists, gardeners, and dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly to create a quiet oasis where visitors could escape the rest of the world for a little while and just enjoy nature.
The arboretum features a paved walking path that's suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Near the middle of the path sits a retired Union Pacific caboose, a tribute to the location's former identity.
As you walk the path, admiring the flowers and trees, you'll no doubt feel the sense of calm and peacefulness that Jim Kluck envisioned so many years ago. This sweet little slice of nature just outside of downtown Schuyler is a truly special place.
